Traveling Waves and Power Waves

M icrowave equivalent-circuit theory is like a grand old building: elegant, carefully crafted, passed from generation to generation, and rooted in history. Traveling waves, the measureable electromagnetic field solutions of Maxwell’s equations in a transmission line, form the foundation of the theory. You must descend into the basement to see them; not many people do so. It is in this “basement...

Travelling waves in atomistic chains and kinetic relations

Martensitic materials pose good test problems for the analysis of the passage from atomistic to continuum. The reason is that on the microscopic level, they can be well approximated by a chain of atoms governed by Newton’s equations; thus, the system is microscopically Hamiltonian. However, martensitic materials can undergo phase transitions, and moving phase boundaries can generate dissipation...

Saturation, traveling waves and fluctuations

In this talk I discuss the high energy asymptotics of QCD scattering, and its similarity to a reaction–diffusion process. I also discuss detailed numerical studies of the mean field approximation to this picture, i.e., the Balitsky–Kovchegov equation. Perturbative QCD, in the form of the BFKL equation, predicts that in the high energy (small-x) limit, cross sections rise as a power of the cente...

Directed Graphs and Traveling Waves

The existence of traveling wave solutions for equations of the form u, = t/vv + F'(u) is considered. All that is assumed about F is that it is sufficiently smooth, lim^i^^ F(u) = -oo, F has only a finite number of critical points, each of which is nondegenerate, and if A and B are distinct critical points of F, then F (A) * F(B). The results demonstrate that, for a given function F, there may e...

Traveling Waves in

For a class of 1-dimensional lattice dynamical systems we prove the existence of periodic traveling waves with prescribed speed and arbitrary period. Then we study asymptotic behaviour of such waves for big values of period and show that they converge, in an appropriate topology, to a solitary traveling wave.
